CLIMOS Opinion Articles – An expert view of our work.

The CLIMOS project is a European research initiative working to develop an Early Warning System (EWS) for sand fly-borne diseases (SFBDs). With climate change driving tropical diseases into new regions, Europe is becoming increasingly vulnerable to illnesses such as leishmaniasis and phlebovirus infections.

CLIMOS brings together experts from across disciplines—climate science, epidemiology, entomology, veterinary science, and data modelling—to share insights and perspectives from their work.

We have gathered all the CLIMOS Opinion Articles to share with you. These pieces are written by our partners – researchers, scientists, public health officials, and policy experts – and explore some of the project’s most pressing themes:

Medical & disease:

  • A medical entomologist’s perspective on the CLIMOS project.
  • The link between weather and disease.
  • The transition from ignorance to expertise on sand flies.
  • The value of an early warning system (EWS) for sand fly-borne diseases.

CLIMOS & climate change:

  • What the CLIMOS project is and its purpose.
  • Using climate data for an EWS against sand fly diseases.
  • The Mediterranean as a climate change hotspot.

Data & EWS:

  • The Data Lifecycle as a key project asset.
  • The importance of making data FAIR.
  • An EWS can save lives.
  • Using blood samples for risk assessment.
  • A lighthearted take on data management from a sand fly’s view.

Collaboration & policy:

  • The crucial role of stakeholder engagement.
  • Foresight scenarios in policy making.
  • The dialogue between vets and dog owners on Canine Leishmaniasis.
  • Translating EU project feedback into actionable policy.
  • Open science and dissemination for public health.
